A Dialogue on Spiritual Gifts and Psychic Abilities
from a Christian and Biblical Perspective:

    Introduction
    Spiritual Gifts from God
    Jesus as Psychic Healer
    Common Misconceptions
    Psychic Abilities for Believers
    Conclusion

Given that the Center for Light and Healing is located in east Tennessee, this page is included here because there is a high percentage of Christians in and around this area who struggle with spiritual gifts and psychic abilities being compatible with their religious beliefs and values.

It is a natural human tendency to fear the unknown as part of our survival instinct to protect ourselves when we are unsure about or do not understand something or someone. Unfortunately, these fears will also extend to those we trust and support in our lives, such as our friends or loved ones, or those spiritual and religious mentors we know and look up to the most, such as our church clergy, pastors, ministers, or priests. All of these people are not immune from having fears or distrust of their own because of their own ignorance or lack of understanding of the subject.

Sadly, these fears of the unknown contribute to all sorts of prejudicial or judgmental thinking or negative biases toward psychics or psychic abilities or those having spiritual gifts in general that continue to be perpetuated around today. For example, psychics are inherently evil, or worship the devil, or will lead one astray from God, or are only out to get your money. These rash judgments or prejudices are so prominent among some circles or groups in and around this area today that, unfortunately, many people find they have difficulty even bringing up the subject of psychics to others in their life. We know this to be the case because more than a few have confided their experiences to Aaron.

However, that being said, having and developing spiritual gifts and psychic abilities is by no means incompatible with the Christian faith or the Bible. Rather, on the contrary, spiritual gifts and psychic abilities are indeed supported by Christianity and the Bible. It is important to understand that seeking assistance from someone with spiritual gifts or psychic abilities does not have to conflict in any way whatsoever with your spiritual or religious views or beliefs. Rather, a professional psychic can and will support and encourage you in whatever pathway you so choose to grow closer to God.

If you are one who struggles with this topic yourself and/or have difficulty with approaching or addressing others in your life who you know do, then we invite you to move into a more fuller and mature discussion of this subject with us now as you discern for yourself the truth. Please read on.

Back

We will begin our discussion with the book of Corinthians. In the book of Corinthians, the Bible clearly says that spiritual gifts come from God and are given to us by the Holy Spirit. They include, among other gifts, the gift of hands-on-healing and working miracles, the gift of prophecy, and, in particular, the gift of discernment of spirits (1 Cor 12:1-13). The Bible does not specifically use the modern day word "psychic" but rather refers to the gift of prophecy. About 40% of the books of the Bible are written by prophets, and the abilities of the prophets as described throughout the Bible to hear voices, see visions, and sense spirits and God are the exact same abilities of the modern day terms-Clairaudience, Clairvoyance, and Clairsentience, respectively-described by modern day prophets, or psychics.

Many Christians mistakenly believe that the Bible supports the idea that prophets or psychics should be avoided. In actuality, however, the Bible simply warns about false prophecy. For example, see Ezekiel 13:3-23 and Ezekiel 14:9-10. It also should be pointed out that the Bible clearly differentiates those true prophets, or messengers of God, from those diviners, enchanters, charmers, sorcerers, and fortune tellers who may otherwise use black magic to harm others (Deuteronomy 18:9-22).

Unfortunately, these warnings are not unfounded since more than a few people have been mistakenly scammed by so-called psychics who have only looked out for their own self-interest or gain at the expense of others, giving the rest of us a bad name. Psychics are no different from any other profession in that there are varying degrees of skills or talents possessed by those in the field, and we, too, would caution you about approaching just any psychic out there, especially over the Internet. However, nowhere in the Bible does it say that prophets or psychics should be avoided outright.

On the contrary, the Bible talks about the gift of prophecy as being one of the most important spiritual gifts that we all should desire and seek (1 Cor 14: 1-5). We do not believe that the Bible is talking about something that is gone and past here, but rather something we all should be seeking through our relationship with God. The Bible asks "Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles" (1 Cor 12: 29). In short, we are all capable of talking and listening to God. And, we are all capable of healing others, working miracles, and discerning spirits through our relationship with God. For those who would believe that only some people are meant to prophesy, we would refer them to Acts 2:17-18: "It will come to pass in the last days, God says, that I will pour out of my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy."

Image of Jesus in Light

Jesus was indeed one of the greatest psychics and healers of all time. You do not have to read very far into the New Testament of the Bible to learn that Jesus spent his life healing others through his faith and his relationship with God. And, it was through Jesus' connection and relationship with God that God gave him the messages he received to share with others and his ability to heal others through faith and his hands and messages alone.

As a Christian Psychic, this too is what Aaron's work is about as he simply and humbly strives to serve as a messenger and share the things to others that God asks him to share. In addition, through his hands-on-healing, Aaron simply and humbly strives to serve as a conduit for God's will to heal other people's mental, emotional, and physical ailments just as Jesus did through his relationship with God. In fact, the connection and relationship that Jesus had with God has actually served as one of Aaron's biggest role models and influences to his life and his life's work and purpose. Again, Jesus was indeed one of the greatest psychics and healers of all time, and the Bible clearly says that just as with Jesus, so too do other's spiritual gifts come through their relationship with God. This is what we all should desire and seek.

At the same time, Jesus was crucified for living the life and having the connection with God that he did. And, there were many who did not even personally know Jesus but who judged, feared, and accused him until he was crucified on the cross. Because of their own prejudices and biases, they failed to recognize Jesus as having lived a life dedicated to God.

One of the most common misconceptions regarding psychics is that psychics cannot also be Christian and that Christians cannot also be psychics. This simply is not the case. As we have already discussed, Jesus was one of the greatest psychics and healers of all time. And, there are many renowned and well-respected Christian psychics today, including Echo Bodine, and even Jewish psychics, such as Liza M. Wiemer.

Perhaps where Christians have the most difficulty is in the modern day term psychic over what is referred to as prophecy in the bible. Again, though, about 40% of the books of the Bible are written by prophets, and the abilities of the prophets as described throughout the Bible to hear voices, see visions, and sense spirits and God are the exact same abilities of Clairaudience, Clairvoyance, and Clairsentience described by modern day psychics. This is mainly a matter of semantics. Whether you personally prefer to use the term prophet instead to describe modern day psychics makes little difference.

Another common misconception regarding psychic abilities is that we are not capable of having a personal relationship with God. Many people in our world today struggle with having a personal relationship with God. We must realize that our relationship with God, just like any other relationship, is a two-way process. To imply that we are not capable of talking to God and that God does not talk to us, is akin to saying that we cannot have a personal relationship with God. Again however, as the Bible clearly spells out, it is through our relationship with God, that we are all capable of listening to God, and hence, intuiting and receiving messages from God and having the spiritual gifts of which we speak. Did you know, for instance, that each and every time you say a prayer or simply talk to God that there is a response trying to make its way back to you? Aaron often feels that as a society, if only we would spend as much time working on listening to God in silent prayer and meditation as we sometimes spend talking to God, then we would be much more accustomed to receiving the responses back. When we learn to listen more, we recognize psychic abilities as being a natural phenomenon of which we are all capable.

Another common misconception sometimes held by Christians is that it is not possible for people to have the ability to communicate with the dead or the spirits of departed friends and loved ones. First of all, it should be pointed out that in the book of Corinthians, the Bible clearly says that the spiritual gift of discernment of spirits, among other gifts, comes from God and is given to us by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1-13). At the same time, it should be noted that there are actual accounts in the Bible of psychics or mediums indeed talking with the dead. One such account is in 1 Samuel 28: 3-20.

In the account in Samuel, verse 3 states that Samuel is dead. Saul goes to the medium at En-dor, who then requests that the medium summon Samuel from the dead so that Saul can talk with him. According to the King James version of the Bible in 1 Samuel 28: 10-11, it is written, "And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel." Starting in 1 Samuel 28:15, the medium then summons Samuel and describes what he looks like to Saul as she sees him and proceeds to give Saul direct messages from Samuel as Samuel talks to Saul. Incidentally, it was Saul who, after his life transforming experience, later changed his name to Paul and wrote the account in 1 Corinthians 12 in which he explains that the gift of discernment of spirits comes from God.

If you or someone you know have been in doubt about the Christian perspective on the ability to communicate with departed friends and loved ones, we would encourage you to look up and read these passages for your yourself.

Back

Interestingly, the Bible talks about the gift of prophecy or psychic abilities as being not for the benefit of unbelievers, but for the benefit of believers (1 Corinthians 14:22). From the perspective of skeptics, who we also encounter from time to time, it is very difficult to prove to them that the work of psychics is for real. That proof would require that we prove beyond a reasonable doubt that God is for real and that we can talk to him, which they do not want to accept from a scientific point of view or their standard of proof. There is a saying, "For those who believe, no proof is necessary; for those who don't believe, no proof is enough." This is so very true and applicable here.

What really concerns Aaron the most is not the people who would consider it worthwhile to seek out the assistance of a psychic but, worse, those who would consider it to be a waste of time, energy, or money to develop and work on a closer relationship with God. Developing a closer relationship with God is what Aaron's sessions are all about--how God is working in your life and how you can be assisted in learning how God is working on bringing you closer in your communication and relationship together.

It is important to understand that seeking out the assistance from a psychic or someone with spiritual gifts is meant to further enhance your spiritual and religious beliefs rather than go against them. It is our sincere belief that everyone is meant to follow that path that God is working through them with, and just as with your spirit guides or guardian angels, so too will Aaron support and encourage you in whatever pathway you so choose to grow closer to God.

Back

Receiving spiritual guidance from angels or other messengers of God has been around since the beginning of time and spans virtually all cultures and religious traditions. There are actually over 400 references to messages being given to others from angels, archangels, guardian angels, or spirit guides contained throughout the Bible.

Spiritual gifts and psychic abilities are indeed supported by Christianity and the Bible and come out of our relationship with God. And, contrary to what one may believe about psychic abilities, it is our inherent birthright to be in communication with God, and we should all strive to seek out and develop our natural spiritual gifts and connection to God further. Aaron is doing God's work, and his gifts come from God and a caring and humble heart. Subsequently, God protects and watches over him and his clients while he is doing his work.
